I recently purchased a conical burr grinder from my local B,B&B (it was my first and only time, so stop questioning my masculinity). Anyway, I am happy to say that it was worth the money.
Burr grinders are supposed to be better than blade grinders because they give a more uniform grind, and don’t heat up the beans when grinding (which can distort the taste of the coffee) like blade grinders supposedly do.

The model I purchased is a Supreme Grindâ„¢ Automatic Burr Mill by Cuisinart. It looks a little high tech, especially next to our old coffee pot, but the coolest thing about it is that you can select the coarseness of the grind. Huh? Different brewing methods require the beans to be ground differently. French press coffee makers need more coarsely ground beans, while at the other end of the spectrum, espresso machines require more finely ground beans. The plain old auto drip machines sit in between.
The Cuisinart changes grinds with a simple twist of the collar below where the beans are held. There are numerous settings that can be used, not just fine, medium, and coarse.
Another nice feature is the ability to set the grinder for a pre-determined amount of beans. The switch goes from 4 to 18 cups and stops automatically when finished. One thing you’ll have to do is figure out how many cups on the grinder correspond to how many cups on your coffee maker. It varies with everyone, depending on how strong you like your coffee. Another feature is that it holds half a pound of beans, although you don’t really want beans sitting out at room temp for days on end before you use them.
I was really surprised when I tasted my first cup of coffee after using the grinder. I don’t know how to describe it other than it had a much better taste than after using a blade grinder. I’d definitely recommend this product to any coffee aficionado currently using the blades of death to grind their coffee.

Costco sells these. They’re decent burr grinders, but suffer from the common burr grinder problem – static electricity from a high-speed burr, so grounds fly around when you open the grounds container. Recommend checking out the Solis burr grinders. They’re more expensive, but also much higher quality. I’d give the Cuisinart 3 stars. It’s definitely a step up from any blade grinder, but nothing special as far as burr grinders go.
